PATEA PATRIOTIC WORK
Finances were in a healthy state, although there would be frequent calls on the funds, stated the treasurer, Mr. F. Mairs, at a meeting of the Patea Patriotic Social Committee on Wednesday. The sum of £124 12s 3d had already been expended on soldiers' comforts and farewells. Letters of thanks are to be sent Miss J. Fairweather and Mr. M. Fairweather for giving their fee for music, Mrs. R. W. Haddow for the free use of the hall and the Women's Institute for providing supper, at the recent farewell to the third echelon. Letters of thanks are also to be sent to the Hawera High Schol and Wanganui Savage Club for their efforts for the committee, to Mrs. R. M. Stevens on behalf of the children who raised an excellent amount at a shop day, the Boy Scouts for their copper trail effort, and to Miss Matthews, Wanganui, for her offer to put on a review. It was decided to send the local men overseas a Christnias cake as well as other gifts. It was decided to give £5 to the Patea Women's Institute towards unaddressed parcels, as it was thought that by this means local soldiers whose addresses were not available might be got in touch with. Mr. G. Francis was appointed convener of arrangements for a Women's Institute drama evening in aid of patriotic funds. Mrs. R. W. Haddow suggested that consideration be given to raising funds for the new appeal for provincial funds, chiefly for the rehabilitation of soldiers. The London rebuilding appeal was also discussed, and it was decided that the executive of the social committee and the executive of the Patea patriotic committee meet immediately and discuss ways and means of raising money for both appeals. Mr. F. Ramsbottom presided.
