WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

Okaiawa: The seventh birthday party was celebrated in the Okaiawa hall. A special invitation was sent to all grandmothers in the district and a prize awarded to the grandmother having the largest family. Mrs. Good, president, welcomed the visitors. The Normanby, Tawhiti, Turuturu, Ramanui and Okaiawa Maori were represented. Thanks were tendered by the presidents of these branches. Miss King spoke on behalf of the grandmothers present. Cards and competition winners were; Cards, Mrs. Knuckey, Normanby; fishing, Mrs. Coburn, Hawera; balloon, Miss Shirley Ward; carrying peas, Mrs. Coburn; paper cutting, Mrs. Warnock and Mrs. Petty. Items were given by Misses Shirley Ward, Sybil Tippett and Joy Tauroa. Mrs. A. Bennoch played accompaniments. A basket of spring flowers was presented to Mrs. Good by Mrs. Crawford. Mrs. Cleaver, Normanby, aged 88, the oldest grandmother present and the mother of 14 children, was presented with a shoulder spray hy Mrs. Good and was the recipient of a hand-worked handkerchief the work of Miss Phillips. An iced birthday cake was cut by Mrs. Lees, a former president. Mangatoki: Mrs. B. N. Linn presided at the monthly meeting. Miss M. Pease eontributed the golden thread reading. Members reported making calls upon the sick during the month. Mrs. Lambie's report on the month's work of the sewing and knitting circle was read. A letter was received from an airman thanking the institute for a knitted pullover. It was decided to donate ls per member to the Dominion headquarter's appeal to he sent to the war purposes appeal fund and to give ls per member to the Taranaki Spitfire fund. It was decided to send eight Christmas parcels to soldiers overseas. Miss Pease offered to pack all the goods. Mesdames J. Cathie and G. McGuinness were appointed delegates to attend the half-yearly council meeting at Stratford. Hostesses were Mesdames J. Lambie, Druce, Cathie and McGuinness.
