GIRL GUIDES AT KAPONGA
Reports covering the year's activities of the Girl Guides and Brownies and of the Girl Guide committee were submitted to the annual meeting at Kaponga. The president, Mrs. E. L. Abbott, was in the chair. The secretary, Mrs. F. N. Gardner, presented a statement of receipts and expenditure which showed that at the end of the financial year there was a sum of £13 2s 9d in harid. Two guides, Jean Taylforth and . Dulcie Williams, were appointed to sit for lieutenants' warrants. Mrs. I.:; T. Webster was appointed instructress in connection with the knitting of socks, mittens, mufflers and balaclavas. A circular from Dominion headquarters asked for knitted work to be sent in by November 1. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs. E. L. Abbott; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames I. E. Evans and J. Tattersall; committee, Mesdames I. T. Webster, C. Paterson, E. L. Mulcock, A. R. Barker, J. Guy, B. .E. Cleland and W. Williams, with power to add; auditor, Mr. L. A. W^lls; secretary and delegate to provincial meetings, Mrs. F. N. Gardner. Mrs. Abbott thanked the committee for its co-operation during the past year. "The committee's report- recorded that seven meetings had been held during the year. A grant of £5 had been made to assist two guides, Jean Taylforth and Norma Eden, in payment of expenses at the centennial training camp at Featherston, Sister A. N. McLaughlin and Mrs. H. H. Elmes had been appointed examiners for emergency ahd first aid badges respectively. The secretary Had aitended two meetings of the provincial executive. Funds had been augmented to the extent of £6 2s ld by means of a cake and vegetable stall. district commissioner, Miss C. Free, and visiting guides were present at the birthday^gar|y. The committee regretted its"'ios»-of ihe services of the captain, MisS'UMelville, acting-Lieuten-ant Miss L. Andrews and Brown Owl Mrs. E. L. Mulcock. Miss Melville had been a guider and captain of the company for 11 yeai's. Three guides, Misses D. Williams, J. Taylforth and M. Sutherland, had acted as lieutenants. Miss Cutler. Cardiff, was giving assistance when it was possible. The Guide report said that 19 Guides were on the roll. Five of these were second class and 12 tenderfeet, three recruits and three acting lieutenants. Proficiency badges had been won as follows: Emergency 10, athlete 7, hostess 2, cook 1, pioneer 2 and second class 2. All parades had been well attended. Thanks were given to Mr. D. D. Sutherland. who provided a birthday cake. The Poppy patrol had won the inter-patrol I bariner and Mrs. Gardner's cup for the patrol making the best selection of toys and clothes. A consignment of toys had been sent to St. Mary's children's home at Palmerston Nortb. Before her. departure for Wellington the captain, Miss Melville, had been presented with a framed picture. Jean Taylforth was one of the three Guides chosen to represent Taranaki at Ihe centennial camp. Norma Eden, a lone Guide, was also there and Ella Guy attended the January camp at Lepperton. A plain and fancy dress dance raised £5 15s towards the headquart'ers gift week for motor ambulances. The Brownie report stated that there were six Brownie and two recruits on the roll. Owing to the resignation of the Brown Owl, Mrs. J. H. Tyack had been acting as Tawny Owl. It was regretted that she could not continue permanently. Attendances had been only fair on account of sickness. Mrs. H. E. Carde, Kapuni Street, is visiting Wellington. Mr. G. Kenyon, Palmerston North, is visiting Mr. and Mrs. John Guy.
