Miss N. Johnson is a visitor to New Plymouth. Mrs. J. McCarty, Wellington, visited Hawera friends during the week. Mrs. Keith Wells, Meremere, has been visiting her mother, Mrs. A. H. Fever, New Plymouth. Aitl for War ElTort. To provide funds for the 9br effort of the Girl Guide organisation, a mah jongg, contract and auction bridge party attracted 60 players on Wednesday evening, when Mrs. A. M, Young entertained at her home, Victoria Street, assisted by Mrs. A. Evans, president of the Girl Guide committee. The hostess wore a i frock of black taffeta, with floral design in fuchsia tonings, and Mrs. Evans' frock was lacquered gold satin with black background. Mrs. Evans thanked the hostess for the use of her home and introduced Miss Noble, district commissioner. Miss Noble outlined the war work so far accomplished by the Guides and outlined the future programme, which included cultivation of garden plots. Prizes were won by Mrs. A. M. Winks (mah jongg), Mrs. H. E, Webster (contract) and Mrs. G. B. Mann (auction). The guests included Mesdames P. 0. Veale, H. E. Webster, D. O. L. Howdcn, W. W. Thomas, Willis, Campbell, J. The Turitown Drama Circle presented an acted reading of Esther McCracken's comedy "Quiet Wedding," directed by Mrs. W. Oliver, in the Institute rooms. Visitors were welcomed by the president, Mrs. J. W. J. Harding. Musical Evenhig Ileld. An antertaining programme of musical items, interspersed with short sketches on composers and their works, made up an interesting evening at the Women's Club on Monday, when the music circle met. Mrs. A. K. Fyson acted as hostess and organiser. Among those present were Mesdames R. Graham, HardwickSmith (Eltham), A. Thomson, P. 0. Veale, Guthrie, E. Evans, G. Meyrick, J. Ekdahl, R. R. Henderson, Dickie, A. J. Corrigan, Misses W. Huggins, A. Shelton, G. O'Brien, F. Lander, M. Crabb and J. Evans.
