GENERAL DISTRICT NEWS
At the recent first aid examinations of the Kaponga branch of the Red Cross Society all the candidates passed and the examiners congratulated them on the high standard they had attained. The candidates were: — First year: Misses U. West, F. I. Gardner, A. Collins, M. Alty, R. Radford, F.r Bailey and T. Bankhead. - Second year; Mesdames B. E. Bocock, J. M. Paterson and A. Dawson and the Misses D. E. Guy and Ida Bernold. The lectures were given by Dr. J. 1. R. Gray, Kaponga, and practical demonstrations were given by Mr. A. Schicker of the St. John Ambulance Association. The examiners were Dr. T. N. Watt, Opunake, who set and corrected the wri'tten work, and Messrs. D. J. Briggs and J. Millar, of the St. John Ambulance Association, Hawera, who did the practical and oral work. All the Mangatoki candidates for home nursing were also successful, the names being: Mesdames N. V. Anderson, I. C. Coates, E. M. Parsons, S. Pease, M. I. Pease, M. Revell and the Misses J. Bennie, D. I. Gatenby, E. Parsons and H. J. Schicker. Their course of lectures was conducted by Mesdames Henry and Luxton, Mangatoki, and they were examined by Dr. J. I. R. Gray in written work and: Mrs. E. C, Leslie, Kapuni,, in practical and oral work. MethodLst Mission Work. The Rev. G. Laurenson, ' home and Maori missioner, gave a lecture on the mission work of the Methodist church throughout New Zealand when he visited Kaponga last week. He referred to the great work of the Rev. John Whiteley and the eflect of his massacre on the Maoris, who, he said, greatly regretted their unfortunate mistake. Methodist Church. A gift afternoon in aid of the stall at a f orthcoming garden party was held iri the Kaponga Methodist church hall last week. Songs were sung by Mrs. W. McCook and the Misses Florence Harding and Jean Southern. Accompaniments were played by Mrs. I. E. Exaus and Miss Phyllis Harding. Winners of competitions were Misses Joan Southern and I Phyllis Harding. Afternoon tea was served by members of the Methodist Ladies' Guild. Mrs. E. S. Harkness thanked all for their support. Personal. Mrs. John Fary, Eltham Road, has, returned from a visit to Wellington. Mrs. Norman Spurdle, Inglewood, is staying with her sister, Mrs. Leo Spurdle, Eltham Road. Mrs. P. W. Phillips and family, Masterton, have come to live at Kapuni Street. Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Sutherland are spending a few days at Auroa prior to their departure from the district. Mr. A. McEwen, Hamilton, who spent a few days with Mr. W. O'Neill, has returned. Mr. R. Mortimer, Te Aroha, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. O'Donoghue. Mr. G. T. V. Walker, Wellington, Is spending a holiday with Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Brewer, Kuri Street. ' Mr. J. Pdwer, Christchurch, was a visitor to the district last week, when he spent a few days with Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Bolger.
