BOROUGH OF HAWERA
COUNCIL MEETING HELD The nuisance caused by stray dogs was referred to in a letter received at a meeting of the Hawera Borough Council on Monday night from the Hawera Retailers' Association, which asked that the by-law requiring all dogs brought into town to be on a leash be enforced. No action was taken by the council on the grounds that as Hawera was a centre dependent upon,lhe farming community it would be against the best interests of the business houses to impose the restriction as suggestcd. In accordance with provisions of the Finance Act, 1934, the council resolved, on the recommendntion of the general committee, that the sum of £425 paid into the Nolantown drainage loans account on the purchase by the general aecount of a truck and pump be now paid into a separate account of which „ 300 shall be provided from the Nolantown drainage loans account and the balance of £125 from the district fund account. It was decided also that applicalion be made to the Local Government Loans Board for its approval. The Hawera Red Cross sub-centre was granted permission to hold a shop day. An offer by the Fort Dorset Band to provide a marehing display at Hawera in aid of palriotic funds was referred to the Hawera and district patriotic committee. Permission was granted the Egmont A. and P. Association to erect flags and drive stock during the November show. Mr. G. E. Nichol was granted permission to erect an under-verandah sign fronting his premises in Union Street. Gold Band Taxis was granted permission to transfer the present taxi stand to the opposite side of High Street fronting No. 237 on condition that only one car be parked in High Street at a time, the remaining two cars to stand in Argyle Street. Permission to re-erect a wash-house within four feet of the side boundary of his property was granted to Mr. E. G. Harrison. On the recommendation of the works committee Messrs. Johnson Motors Ltd. was granted permission to erect a pro-truding-over-the-footpath sign for a distance of not rrlore than 10ft fronting Regent Stseet premises. Applications by Mr. A. H. Lambert and Mrs. K. Stockwell for extraordinary water supply services were held over until completion of the reticulation improvement scheme.
