HAWERA ADOPTS SYSTEM ADDITION AL SERVICE Acceptance of the offer of the country library service, which undertakes to give a changing supply of 500 books, changed at least three times a year, provided the system of issue is up-to-date and that the library is made free to borough residents and ratepayers, was decided upon at the meeting of the Hawera Borough Council last night on the recommendation of the library committee. Steps are to be taken to bring the new service into operation as soon as possible. Half Must be Non-fiction. The books supplied by the country library service will be in addition to the library's own purchase of stock and at least half must be non-fiction. A request service will be made available by which practically any book for a serious purpose can be supplied on request from the 40,000 books in stock or from the contents of other large libraries in the country. The increase in the cost of the library service at Hawera on the basis of free issues is estimated at £107 a year. and it is suggested that 1500 people will avail themselves of the facilities offered under the new system. On the recommendation of the library committee it was agreed that the system of issuing books to subscribers be on the Lines adopted by the Wellington libraries and that the present classification of novels be replaced by classification alphabetically under the author's name. It was also agreed that the covering of novels be discontinued and that the system of fines prescribed by the library by-laws be enforced.
