DEATH OF MR. J. BUTLER Born in Canton Argau, Switzerland, 80 years ago, Mr. Joseph Butler, who died suddenly at New Plymouth on September 10, had been in Taranaki since 1884 and had lived for a long time in the Inglewood district. Though he had been in failing health his death was unexpected. Two years after his arrival in New Zealand Mr. Butler married Miss Ida Fischer, and shortly afterwards he took up a bush section on Suffolk - Road, farming it successfully for many years before moving to Dudley Road. There Mr. and Mrs. Butler lived with their family for several years before retiring to New Plymouth 20 years ago. Mr. Butler was of a retiring disposition but he took a keen interest in the farming community and its activities, and was highly respected by all with whom he was associated. Before the funeral on Thursday Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Joseph's Church, New Plymouth, by the Rev. Father Heavey, who also conducted the service at the graveside. There was a large attendance of friends and relatives, more than 60 cars comprising the cortege. The pall-bearers were six grandsons, Messrs. Eric Bocock, Gordon Herlihy, John Butler, Raymond Butler, Clement Fabish and Harry Hall. Four grandsons who carried the flowers were Messrs. Bamey Butler, Kevin Butler, Michael Herlihy and Allen Butler. Mr. Butler is survived by two brothers, Mr. John Butler, Tariki, and Mr. :Kaspar ■Butler, Inglewood, two sisters, .Anna and Martini, both of whom live in Switzerland, and by a widow and family of 13. The sons are Messrs. John Butler, Whakatane, Fred Butler, Norfolk Road, Joseph Butler, Huirangi, Edward Butler, Oeo, and Walter and Leonard Butler, Eltham. Daughters are Mesdames M. Bocock, Stratford, W. Herlihy, Kaimata, B. Fabish. Dudley Road, J Hall, Pungarehu, J. Chamberlain, Kaponga, J. Stachurski, Ratapiko, and L. G. Smith, New Plymouth. There are 69 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
