RUMOUR DENIED

TERRITORIAL STRENGTH A rumour that a large number of Taranaki recruits for the territorial force had declined to sign up for general service at home and overseas was given an emphatic denial by the army authorities yesterday. Officers expressed surprise at such a rumour, which they said had little foundation. It was admitted that there had been isolated cases, but they had been so few that their affect on the strength was infinitesimal. It was pointed out that recruits would gain little by a refusal to sign, for their naraes then would automatically.go into the ballot.
