FARM WORKERS' WAGES
NOT INCREASED BY ORDER RISE ONLY UNDER AWARDS The 5 per cent. increase in wages recently made by a general order of the Arbitration Court does not apply to farm workers, it would appear from a letter received by the North Taranaki provincial executive of the Farmers' Union from the Dominion secretary, Mr. A. P O'Shea, who stated that inquiries had been made by the office whethef the 5 per cent. increase applied to the wages of farm workers. The 5 per cent. increase applied to the wages of workers under awards and industrial agreements of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act and its amendments. It could not be over-emphasised that the agreement made under the Agricultural Workers' Act had no relation to an award. That, he said, showed the inadvisability of using the tecm "award" in comiection with farm workers' wages. According to a statement in the Standard the Workers' Union advised that shearers' rates were not subject to the 5 per cent. increase, Mr. O'Shea stated.
