Ashburton Races. South Island horses will be seen in action at the Ashburton meeting to-day. Fair to Fine Weather. Fair to fine weather with moderate temperatures and light variable breezes is predicted in the official forecast. Racing at Avondale. Considerable interest is centring round the opening of the Avondale Racing Club's spring meeting to-day when the principal event is the Avondale CupAid for Distressed London. The Government has sanctioned the transfer of £100,000 New Zealand currency to the Lord Mayor of London s fund for the rfelief of distress caused by German air raids. Mining Dispute Intervention. At the instance of the Government. the Labour Department liaison officer has intervened in the Macdonald mine dispute, and conferences with both interested parties were held yesterday. Admiration for Britain. Admiration felt in New Zealand for the high spirit of the British people and sympathy for the fate which had overtaken London as a res'ult of barbarous German attacks was expressed by the Prime Minister. Farm Workers' Wages. Farm workers, not being under an award, were not entitled to the 5 per cent. increase recently made by the Arbitration Court in a general order, it appears from a letter forwarded by the Dominion secretary of the Farmers' Union. Finance Emergency , Case. Because he considered that cases of that nature were of considerable importance to the commercial community and the public generally the magistrate reserved his decision in a case alleging breaches of the Finance Emergency Reeulations heard in the Wellington court.
