UNDER THE PLOUGH
STRATFORD CAMP SITE The ploughing of about half of the King Edward Park camp site area at Stratford marks the commencement of the borough council's programme to make unused sections and parts of re~ serves productive. The areas being put under the plough are those which are under the council's jurisdiction, and are not required for recreational purposes. About two acres of the north side of the camp site have been ploughed, still leaving ample room for campers on the south side of the area adjacent to the camping facilities. The crop to be sown will be mainly potatoes, though some carrots and parsnips may be put in. The ground has been under grass for years and sheep have been run on it, so that it should produce excellent crops. Moreover the working of the soil and cropping will have effects which, it is hoped, will lead to better pasture when the area is put back into grass. Similar work is planned for a section in Swansea Road and cropping may be undertaken in other suitable areas if the council considers it desirable to have more ground in useful production.
