PATRIOTIC APPEALS

ELTHAM DISGUSSION The advisability of holding national appeals was given consideration by the Eltham patriotic committee this week. The Mayor, Mr. Lewis, said that he did not agree with national appeals as they were not always held when suitable to local conditions. It was decided to hold the matter over until after the conference of provincial secretaries had been held at Wellington, where it is understood national appeals would be discussed. The resignation of Mr. H. V. George, who has. been transferred to New Plymouth, was accepted with regret. Mr. F. Taylor reported that with the assistance of several youths and one helper aged 72 years the gardens of the wives of those on service had been dug. A committee comprising Messrs. R. T. Bourke, F. Taylor and the members of the young helpers' league were authorised to raise money for soldiers' parcels.
