HARBOUR AFFAIRS

WORK AT NEW PLYMOUTH A good month's shipping was. reviewed by the New Plymouth Harbour Board at its monthly meeting yesterday, total trade through the port in August exceeding 26,000 tons. A large amount of dredging was done. The aggregate tonnage of shipping using the port in August was 57,900, -a decrease of 8309 tons on August last year, according to the report of the harbourmaster, Captain O. F. Mclntyre. The decrease was caused by fewer ships using the port, 24 against 28, but more goods were handled, imports increasing by 75 per cent. from 10,654 tons to 17,775 tons, and exports by almost half, from 5594 tons to 8239 tons. The new fire-fighting installation had been completed on Moturoa wharf, the foreman-in-charge, Mr. J. E. Hawes, reported. It comprised two lengths ofhose each of 180 feet housed in containers in such a position that any part of the wharf could be reached. Dredging returns showed that 38,804 tons of material had been moved, 3104 tons being from the ridge on the east side of Moturoa wharf.
