MATIERE WELFARE DANCE

A dance held at the Matiere hall in aid of funds for the welfare league was well attended. Music was played by Mr. J, Manning, Mr. W. Cowley and Miss Gray. Mr. J. Hannan jnr. was master of ceremonies. Novelty dances were won by Mrs. E. Eng and Mr. J. Dunn and Miss Baker and Mr. L. Best. Patriotic Card Party. At a card evening held at the Otangiwai hall in aid of patriotic funds the winners were Mrs. E. Thomas, Mrs. E. Owens and Mr. W. Ritchie. Badininton Season Ends. The closing night of the Matiere Badminlon Club was held on September 5 A large number of members and friends were present and a Yankee tournament winners were Miss P. Turner and Mr. A. C. Bowman, who received prizes given by Mr. and Mrs. A. K. Margan. The runners-up were Miss D. A. Coe and Mr. A. Raitt, who were the final button holders for the season. Lighting for the evening was provided by Mr. A. Raitt. After supper the club captain, Mr. A. Raitt, said the season had been quite successful although there had been gaps caused by enlistments. He hoped the club would carry on. In the absence of Mr. K. McAllum, the president, Mr. A. K. Margan, welcomed the visitors and referred to the progress of the club, which had just closed its fourth season. He also expressed to Mr. Raitt, who is going into camp the best wishes of the Matiere Badminton Club.

Personal. Mr. and Mrs. Hales, Tatu, were guests of Mrs. M. A. Margan at the week-end. Mrs. Saul, who has been a guest of Mrs. W. Sowry, has returned to Auckland. Misses Monica and Eileen Fife were recent guests of Mrs. Seerup. Mr. D. Brown. Taumarunui, was a recent visitor to Matiere. Miss J. Bonasich is on holiday at Wellington. Mr. M. Laing spent. the week-end at Hamilton. Mr. and Mrs. J. Crosby have returned from a visit to Te Kuiti. Mrs. Wakelin snr, has left for Pahiatua. Dr. Basham, Papakura, was a week-end visitor to Matiere. Mr. W. Bowman and Miss D. Bowman, Auckland, are guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Turner. Miss E. Boult. Sydney, visited Mrs. M. A. Margan during the week-end. Mr. H. Thomas, Otangiwai, has returnjd to New Plymouth. Mr. Williams has returned from Hamilton. Mr. C. Wakelin was a recent visitor to Pahiatua. Mr. W. Cowley left for Raglan on Monday. Miss A. Bishop. Otangiwai, has returned to New Plymouth. Messrs. G. A. Eng, H. Turner, R. Dench, W. Jebb and A. K. Margan visited Piopio recently. Miss J. Whatford. who has been a guest sf Mrs. G. Baker. has gone to Te Aroha. Mr. M. Laing, Matiere postal staff, has been transferred to Ngaruawahia military -mp post office.
