MANY COMPLAINTS
PAYING UP TRUCK FEES Giving a patient ear to the complaints of farmers who were disgruntled at having to pay the proportion of heavy traffic fees levied on their trucks took up much of the clerk's time when special days were arranged for the weighing and fixing of the fees on the trucks, said the chairman, Mr. A. L. Campbell, at a meeting of the Eltham County Council yesterday. Time was also taken up needlessly by farmers who brought their trucks to the weighing depot without first unearthing their registration papers and finding out the engine and chassis numbers. It also took a certain amount of time to operate the weighing "paraphernalia." "However, I don't blame the farmers for complaining, as the imposition of the fees is unfair, but it wastes the clerk's time," said the chairman. "I saw the clerk with his head under the bonnet of a truck looking for the engine number— he'll be a mechanic soon," said another councillor. The discussion arose when the inspector, Mr. H. E. Williams, reported that in a recent half-day at the depot 33 trucks were weighed and the other details attended to.
