The town clerk submitted a report of a national service meeting, which he and Cr. W. J. Smith attended, at New Plymouth. It was decided tha» the Inglewood County Council be advised, in regard to the formation of a Home Guard unit at Inglewood, that when further information was received from Wellington, a public meeting would be called. A letter was received from the Minister of Housing in reply to the council's inquiry regarding delay in completion of State houses in Inglewood. The rfeply stated that the delay was caused through the men employed being put to urgent defence matters, and more urgent rural housing schemes. A letter was received from the Inglewood Chamber of Commerce in respect to the nightwatchman. In the past all matters pertaining to the welfare of the nightwatchman had been attended to by the Chamber of Commerce. As this body was now in recess, the council was askerl to take over their re'sponsibilities. After considerable discussion it was decided on the motion of Cr. Spurdle, seconded by the Mayor, that "while the Chamber of Commerce is in existence, the Borough Council take ho action." The health inspector, Mr. P. A. Milne, reported that there were no cases of infectious diseases in the borough during the month of August.

The electrical report stated that during the month the transfer of the lines to the new poles previously erected in Rata Street, was proceeded with and would be carried on as opportunity permits. A pole was erected in Brown Street to give service lines clearance above the telephone lines and one' new consumer was connected to the system. In compliance with the Public Works Regulations, an inspector was engaged during the month to carry out a complete reinspection of the borough consumers' electrical installations. The electrical commlttee reported that it had considered the matter of the existing scale of charges for domestic water heaters and recommended that as from the date of issue of the re-inspection notice the charges and conditions be £1 per 100 watt per annum where there was an electric range installed. Charges for water heaters were annual and no allowance could be made for periods during which heaters were temporarily disconnected at the consumer's request. The librarian reported that three subscriptions were opened and three cancelled, making a total of 190 subscribers. Nineteen books were purchased.
