WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

Patea: Mrs. A. A. Carey, presiding at the monthly meeting, welcomed members and expressed sympathy with those members who were ill. Members were thanked for the excellent supper provided for the farewell to the third echelon, and Mesdames Roots, Moore and Peacocke for extending hospitality to visitors to Patea for the group school. Resignations from Miss Wollocks and Mrs. G. Hurley were accepted with regret. A circular was received regarding the half yearly council meeting of the South Taranaki Federation, Mesdames S. Gunn and F. Kelly being appointed delegates. Mrs. King was nominated as delegate at the Dominion council meeting. It was decided to hold a progressive five hundred and bridge evening to raise funds for soldiers' Christmas parcels. Members were asked for pieces of warm material for the Red Cross to make up into bedding. Mrs. L. Honeyfield gave a demonstration of bandaging and answered home nursing queries. She was thanked by the president. Competitions resulted: Best bloom, Mrs. Pankhurst 1, Mrs. Gunn 2, Mrs. Honeyfield 8; best bowl flowers, Mrs. Verncy 1, Mrs. Moore 2; jug cqver, Mrs. Verney 1; names cars, Mrs. Verney 1; counting money in bag, Miss L. Carey. Hostesses were Mesdames L. Honeyfield, J. R. Hunger, B. Hazeltine, C. Hill, T. Hills and Miss Harris. Turitown: Miss M. A. Bates gave a talk to members on the care of flowers. The speaker touched on colour schcming suitable for all elasses of modern homes. Four new members were enrolled, 56 being present with Mrs. Harding in the chair. A letter was received from the secretary of the Lady Galway patriotic guild expressing thanks for clothes sent to the depot. A circular re the halfyearly council meeting was _ received and an appeal for help for the lepers at Makogai. Members were asked to bring suitable gifts to the next meeting. One dozen parcels to be sent to soldiers were procured with money realised at last month's bring and buy. Mrs. Lord was in charge. A five-minute biography was given -by Mrs. Harding on the life of Mrs. Emmeline Pankhurst. Thanks were given to Mesdames Murdoch and Sawers for the proceeds of a card party held in the latter's home. Competition results were- Bouquet of spring flowers, Mrs. Fairweather 1, Mrs. Harding 2, Mrs. Murdoch 3; ranuncula, Mrs. Fairweather 1; bran biscuits, Mrs. Brown 1, Mrs. Crofton 2. Afternoon tea was served. i Okaiawa: Mrs. Good presided at the September meeting. A bring and buy stall supervised by Mrs. Walsdorf and Mrs. Cochrane did good business. Comoetitions were judged by Mrs. Huntington, Hawera, and resulted: Best bloom, Mrs. Good 1, Mrs. Cochrane 2, Mrs. Shearer (tied with Mrs. Thomas) 3; best 6d parcel, Mrs. Ward 1, Mrs. Nelson 2, Miss Phillips 3. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Edwards and Mrs. Syrett. Mrs. Syrett and Mrs. Smith offered to visit sick members. A travel talk dealing with a tour through England, America and the Shetland Isles was given by Mrs. Huntington. Taiporoliciiui Maori: Mrs. Toka presided. The monthly competition for a remade article for a refugee resulted: Mrs. Pohere 1, lyirs. Kingi 2; pakaha, Mrs.

Hughes 1. A competition for a best bloom resulted: Mrs. Panenui, Mrs. Campbell, Mrs. Govener and Mrs. Rangiwahia all cqual first. Mrs. Hughes offered her home for a card evening to raise funds for the institutes. A card evening v held by Mrs. Mohi and Mrs. J. Hughes at the home of Mrs. J. Hughes. Winners were: Mrs. Mason 1, Mrs. Rangiwahia 2, Mr. L. Valentine 1, Mr. Cummings 2. Travelling prizes went to Mrs. Rangiwahia and Mr. Cummings. Master John Hughes won a glass bowl.
