EXPENSIVE TO ADMIRERS

Mataroa was a costly horse to his admirers at Awapuni last week. He was a good favourite on Thursdav and when McRae took him to the front after about half a mile he was going so smoothly that his supporters vverc on good terms with themselves. He was still leading as they turned for home but was in trouble at the last fence. He finished third but Smoke Scrcen and Grcat Fair drew right away from him ovcr the last furlong. He was again favourite on Saturday when different tactics were tried. He was ridden in behind the field in the early stages but with no better result as he finished well behind the placed horses. He is likely to be at a much longOr price the next time that he starts in a hurdle race.
