KNOCKED DOWN BY CAR
DEATH OF A YOUNG MAN. EVIDENCE AT THE INQUEST. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston N., Dec. 3. The adjourned inquiry into the circumstances of the death of Cyril Alfred Kreagher, aged 27, on July 14, consequent on the injuries received through being knocked down by a motor lorry while cycling on Kimbolton Road Feilding, on the previous evening, was held this morning. Medical evidence was to the effect that deceased’s injuries were too severs to permit of an operation at the hospital. A post-mortem revealed that the bowel was completely divided in two places. There were signs that deceased bad taken liquoi. Deceased's brother stated in evidence that when the former left him to proceed homo he was quite sober. Arthur John McElroy, machinery foreman for Orona County Council, driver of the lorry which struck deceased, said the vehicle carried two keroseno lamps, one on each side. Ho could seo for a chain to a chain and a-half in front of the lorry. The lights of a car coming towards him blinded him, and he pulled over further towards the correct side. He felt a bump. Prior to that ho had seen nothing on the road except the approaching ear. He stopped the lorry, and on investigating, found deceased badly injured, also hia bicycle damaged, with the lamp still burning. His speed at the time of the accident was 12 to 14 miles an hour. The coroner’s cerdict was that deceased died from a rupture of tluf bowel, caused through being knocked down by a lorry driven by McElroy. The coroner said he did not propose commenting «n the culpability of the driver as, even if there were not criminal proceedings, there might be a civil action
