OKATO METHODIST CHURCH
BAZAAR AND SALE OF WORK. The Hempton Hall, Okato, was a scene of bustling activity yesterday afternoon and evening when the Ladies’ Guild of the Methodist Church held a bazaar and sale of work. Gaily decorated stalls, well laden with goods for sale, lined both sides of the hall, whilst a Christmas tree, bearing plentiful fruit in the shape of attractive gifts, held pride of place at the end of the hall. The bran tub and. “fishing pond” proved an irresistible attraction to the many children present, whilst the ice cream stall did a thriving trade. The Rev. Chambers, of Opunake, in opening the bazaar at 2 p.m., made mention of the splendid work done by the ladies of the guild. He knew the amount of work involved and sincerely hoped that their unselfish efforts would be crowned with success. The object was to raise funds to enlarge the parsonage at Okato, and he felt sure that so worthy an object would be well and generously supported. During the evening a musical programme was rendered and various competitions added to the gaiety of the entertainment. A violin solo was given by Mr. Charles Leech, a solo by Mrs. Larking, while Mrs. Minchin and Masters Moore and Hall recited. The stall-holders were Drapery stall, Mrs. Tapp; sweets, Miss A. Ashley; ice cream, Mr. Hall; produce, Mrs. Roebuck and Mrs. Pearce; woodwork, Mr. Hall; fancy work, Miss Tapp and Miss Winnear; Christmas tree, Misses Smith and Henderson; flower stall, Miss Ivy Henderson and Mr. L. Young; afternoon tea, ladies’ committee; bran tub, Mrs. F. Roebuck.
