ENTERTAINMENTS.

EVERYBODY’S THEATRE LIONEL BARRYMORE IN ‘THE BELLS.’' / The greatest character actor on the stage was the late Sir Henry Irving, and the greatest character ever played by him was undoubtedly that of Mathias in “The Bells.” This wonderful study of human nature in its heights and depths has only now been translated into a tremendous screen play, and Universal were fortunate and successful indeed ill easting the screens foremost player Lionel Barrymore in the magnificent role of Mathias. “The Bells” is a psychological drama of intense force but, thanks to its occasionally whimsical humour and the tender love story running through it, its profound dramatic aroma is toned down. “The Bells” is more than entertainment is more than drama, it is humanity and its story told by a master genius. A big supporting programme is also shown including another entertaining “Go-Get-ters” story under the alluring title, “Never the Train Shall Meet.!’ MALE CHOIR AND ORCHESTRAL CONCERT. What promises to be a concert of more than ordinary interest takes place in SI. Mary’s Hall To-night and Tuesday, November 23. Mns. A. Seales, L.A.8., of Hamilton, is to be the visiting artist, and the combined societies are to be congratulated on securing the services of such a splendid vocalist. The Auckland Star says: “Mrs. Seales is a born artist and can always be relied upon to satisfy ardent music lovers. Her enunciation is a great lesson to vocalists, even in the ppp movements every note and word was heard clearly at the back of the hall” (Auckland Town Hall). In the first part of the programme, under the conductorship of Mr. W. L. Hay, the Male Choir will render some tuneful melodies, both old and new. In the second half, under the baton of Mr. F. W. G. McLeod, L.C.M., the Orchestral Society will give a selection of music that will appeal to all. Messrs. L. Bosworth and D. George will also assist in a duet, flute and saxophone, which will be something quite new to a New Plymouth audience. The box plan is now open at Collier’s. Prices 3/- and 2/-. Book your scat for comfort and convenience.
