MANAWATU GORGE SLIPS
BLASTING OF DANGER POINTS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston North, Nov. 18. Blasting operations in view of removing the menace of a further landslide on the railway in the Manawatu Gorge commenced this morning, when traffic on tho road side of the gorge was suspended at 9 o’clock, a number of motorists watching the operations. Four charges along the base of the wall and one under a huge rock just above the line were exploded seriatim. The first four blew out from the wall like a discharge of artillery, but, beyond making holes six to ten feet across, failed in their mission of sending the wall down the bank. The other charge on the hillside was not effective as the big rock lifted and afterwards appeared untouched. Further blasting is proceeding.
The water pipes are being laid high up on the hillside over this point with a view to resorting to sluicing operations when explosives may be used more effectively.
