SOUTH TARANAKI PLAY
EXCELSIOR OVERPOWER MANAIA. LAY MAKES A CENTURY. Excelsior had an easy victory over Manaia at Hawera, winning on the first innings by a margin of 140 runs. Excelsior sent Manaia in for the second innings, and the visiting team made 60. Undoubtedly the outstanding feature of the match was Stan Lay’s fine performance in compiling 103 runs, being the first South Taranaki senior player to make a century this season. There were only two other Excelsior players who made double figures, Inch 37 and McCarthy 24. In Manaia’s first innings Brown made 27 and in the second Brown again led with 35, while Crawford-Watson made 14 and Hughes 11. ■ Both Kirwin and McCarthy were prominent amongst the bowlers, the former taking five wickets for 32 runs and the latter five for 73. OKAIAWA DEFEAT STRATFORD. FIRST INNINGS VICTORY. Though Okaiawa defeated Stratford, at Stratford, on the first innings, the home team made a great recovery, and with a few more minutes’ play might have won. Stumps were drawn, however, in Stratford’s second innings, one wieket having fallen'for 86 runs. In their first strike Okaiawa made 9!) runs, Penny’s 27 and Barclay’s 20 being the only outstanding scores. Stratford opposed this with 62. In the second innings the visitors compiled 80 runs, Penny (47) again topping the individual scores. The last wicket fell just before 6.15, thus leaving Stratford but fifteen minutes. In this time six overs were bowled, and from these fortyeight balls, three Stratford players made 86 runs. Cole, not out, compilel 59, including four sixes. Little (run out) made a six and three singles, and Wilson, who succeeded him, was not out for 17, including a six and a four. It is probable that Stratford’s score would have been greater but for Okaiawa’s good fielding and the heavy nature of the pitch. The conditions, however, were far from ideal, rain having fallen earlier in the day. The detailed scores were:— OKAIAWA. First Innings.
