AUCKLAND v. SOUTH TARANAKI.
FIRST DAY’S PLAY. A LOW-SCORING MATCH. The Auckland touring team began a two days’ match against South Taranaki at Hawera, yesterday, and a low-scoring game saw three innings completed. South Taranaki won the toss and went to the wickets, but with the exception of Penny 25, Pratt 15, Little 14 and Furrie 11. were unable to make a stand against the bowling of Arblaster and Coates, and. the innings closed at the luncheon adjournment for 100. Auckland fared worse, and McCarthy, who was assisted by the wicket. Cole and Hughes disposed of them for 61. Cooper, who came In when the score was one wicket for one, was the only man to make a stand. He notched 25 and then had the hard luck to hit his wicket when driving Hughes to the leg-boun-dary. South Taranaki did a little better in their second venture, and at about 5.30 were all out for 128, Cole, topping the score with 33 (not out). PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH. CANTERBURY V. AUCKLAND. Christchurch, Last Night. The Plunket Shield match between Auckland and Canterbury commenced at Lancaster Park to-day in sunny weather. There was a fair attendance. Play was not inspiring, and it took Canterbury all the afternoon to run up 232 for seven wickets. The Auckland bowling lacked sting, but Canterbury’s batting on the whole was poor. Scores: CANTERBURY. First Innings.
