VALLEY OF KINGS.
EGYPT’S NEW TREASURES. WONDERFUL FABRICS. NEVER BEFORE SEEN. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—-Copyright. Received Dec. 26, 5.5 p.m. London, Dec. 24. The Daily Mail says there is an extraordinary interest all over the world in Mr. -Carnarvon’s discoveries in the Valley of Kings, the site of ancient 11,efoes, on the left bank of the Nile, near Luxor, where excavations have been proceeding for 16 years. It. has led the Egyptian Government to erect a barrier to prevent people from entering the tomb and spoiling the treasure®. Already there are great demands for hotel accommodation in the Luxor district, and a pilgrimage will begin on a large scale as soon as it is possible to admit visitors.
Mr. Carnarvon was received by Their Majesties at Buckingham Palace, and vividly described the treasures. The Queen was particularly interested. Mr. Carnarvon reported that he had received a cable from Mr. Carter, which might be construed that he had made further discoveries.
It appears, for the first time, that the fabric has 'been found wherein the Egyptian sovereigns were dressed Tutankhamen's and his queen’s dresses are of a diaphonous nature, as portrayed in Egyptian monuments, but never before seen or handled, and of so beautiful and delicate workmanship that their preservation will be a matter of great difficulty. As the objects have so long been kept in the vault they are liable to fall to dust on exposure to the air.
At the back of the King s throne is a unique portrait of the King comprised of specious stones. Nothing to be compared to its beauty has been found in EgyptThe life-size statues of Pharoahs are known to have been fashioned in that .period from actual plaster casts, but this is a true portrait that has now been discovered of Tutankhamen. It has also been discovered how the Egyptians lighted their palaces, using twisted' - linen bands soaked in oil and held uo by metal. Egyptologists hope that the papyri will throw new light on the period.
