FUTURE OF EUROPE.
AN ECONOMIC CONFERENCE. PROPOSAL IN AMERICA. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received Dec. 24, 5 p.m. Washington, Dec. 23. Senator Borah has become the subject of a bitter attack as the result of a resolution cabled on the 21st by members of a former group of irreconcilables, who declare he is placing himself alongside ex-President Wilson concerning the League of Nations. Senator Watson, following the conference with President Harding, declared the President opposes Senator Borah’s resolutions, and desired their defeat in their present form. The former Senators so-called farmers’ bloc, however, announced they favor the resolution. — Aus.-N.Z. Gable Assn. Received Dec. 26, 8.50 p.m. New York, Dee. 25. The New York Times’ Washington correspondent states that other Senators, including 'Senator® Smoot and McCormick, have come out against Senator Borah’s resolution. The correspondent understands there will be a conference of Republican Senators, including Senator Borah, with President Harding this week, at which the situation will be discussed and Senator Borah urged to modify his resolution to a point where it will merely suggest to the Administration that this country should aid Europe, -but that the specific policy be left to the President.
There is every reason to believe that unless Senator Borah accedes to this, request the resolution will be defeated, since under the Senate rules it will require a two-thirds majority for its passage. Senator Smoot said: “We know in advance what the (European nations want, and if we called a conference and then turned down their requests the situation would not be improved. The United States would be placed in a raise position.” Senator McCormick said: “More important to the rehabilitation of Europe than any conference is the exorcism of the spirit of hate which animates Governments and peoples. There can be no real peace for Europe unless the peoples are moved by a Christian will to peace and Christian comity.”—Aus.N.Z. Cable Association.
[Senator Borah proposed an amendment to the Naval Appropriations Bill now before the Senate. He proposed that the President should call a world economic conference, in addition to the Disarmament Conference for the limitation of auxiliary vessels advocated by the House of Representatives.]
