BRISK HOLIDAY TRAFFIC. INCREASE GN CHRISTAIAS EVE. With the town full of shoppers the New Plymouth trams were kept busy during last week, ending with a particularly brisk day on Saturday. For the week closing on Sunday night the number of passengers carried totalled 39,420 and the revenue was £425 8® ixi. in tne corresponding week last year the passengers numbered 36,592 and the revenue was £*-1100 16s lid, but the week only comprised six days, Christmas Day falling on the Sunday. On Saturday a special time-table was in operation and the Christmas Eve bustle was reflected in heavy traffic on the trams. The passengers for that day totalled 10,(521, compared with 9960 on Christmas Eve last year, while the revenue was £ll2 4s lOd, compared with £lO7 10s Bd. Yesterday 6174 passengers used the trams, spending £7l 12s 4d, the figures for Boxing Day last year being 7544 and £8!) Bs.
A remarkable feature this year, as in past holiday times, is the complete absence of accidents of any kind and the smooth running of a crowded timetable under difficult conditions. This is a tribute to the splendid work of the staff, all concerned giving their beet efforts to ensure the satisfaction of the public. The details of last week’s traffic are:—
