WESTOWN.
(From Our Own Correspondent). The esteem in which Mr. G. Bennett, the driver of the electric 'bus, is held by residents of the Westown and Dartmoor districts was evidenced by the crowded attendance at the Westown Hall on Wednesday evening when a complimentary social was tendered to Mr. and Mrs. Bennett to mark the occasion of their marriage. Mr. F. Lobb made an efficient M.C. and kept matters moving merrily, excellent dance music being provided by Mesdames Belcher and Gredig. Interspersed between the daftces a capital musical programme was provided and fully appreciated by the audience, encores Ibeing demanded in every instance and freely given. Items were given by the following: —Songs: “The Kingdom Within Your Eyes,” Mrs. Belcher; “Lazy Mississippi,” Reggie Styles; “Little Pal,” Marjorie Sole; “I Want a Daddy,” Doreen Lobb; “Roses,” Miss Ruby Sole: “The Old Rustic Bridge by* the Mill,” Miss M. Williams. The accompaniments were played by Mesdames Belcher, W. Lauder and Miss Booker.
During an interval, Mr. Garcia, on behalf of those present, spoke in eulogistic terms of the uniform courtesy and civility with which their guest had always carried out his duties, earning the esteem and respect of all the residents of the district. Mr. Garcia presented their guest with a handsome silver tea service, suitably inscribed, and a glass-tray, expressing the hope that he would be retained on the Westown route when the second ’bus arrived. Mr. Garcia concluded by wishing him and Mrs. Bennett every happiness. Mr. Bennett, on rising to respond, was most enthusiastically greeted. In a. happy speech he expressed his thanks, remarking that lie had always recognised that civility cost nothing, and, moreover, he added,’ the people who travelled in the bus made it very easy for him to be civil. Opportunity was also taken of the approach of. the Christmas season to recognise the sterling services of Mr. Edgar Jury, Mr. V. C. Davies presenting him with a fountain pen. Mr. Jury suitably responded. Supper, supplied by the ladies, was then handed round and done full justice to, after which two or three hours were spent in dancing. All the arrangements were in the hands of a committee of young people, comprising Misses M. Wright, R. Johnson, M. James, C dames, L. Medway, C. Johnson and Mr. L. McCann, who are to be congratulated on the success of the function.
