ARSENIC IN COCOA.
STARTLING DISCOVERY MADE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—CopyrightReceived Oct- 19, 8.30 p.m. London, Dec. 18. Owing to the discovery of one-fortieth of a grain of arsenic per pound in cocoa, a retail firm was fined forty shillings. Howntree and Coy., manufacturers, were MM £2O for selling adulterated cocoa- Evidence showed that carbonate of potasn, which was used to make the cocoa more digestive, contained a trace of arsenicRowntree and Coy. were thunderstruck at the discovery, and immediately sacrificed 360 tons of cocoa, valued at fatween £lOO and £250 a ton They endeavored to collect supplies a period of two months, when the tainted carbonate of potash, was used.
