OVERSEAS TRADE.

NEW PLYMOUTH’S DEVELOPMENT.' 31 VESSELS THIS YEAB. 79TH LINER ARRIVES. Th© permanent recognition of New Plymouth a* a centre for overseas trade is now assured. The arrival yesterday morning of the s.s. Tairoa, the last liner due at the port this year, brings the total number of overseas vessels which have visited the port since the itauguration of New Plymouth aa a deepsea port by the s.s. Waiwera on March 31, 1917, up to 79, whilst the number for the year just closing is 31, against laat year’s tally of 22 —the previous best. During the year the largest vessel to berth was the s.s. Port Denison, which was here last month, her principal dimensions bing: Tonnage 10,334, length 500 ft. 4 in.

For the following interesting table, detailing the overseas vessels which called at New Plymouth this year, we are indebted to the harbormaster (Captain Wm. Waller) who has always given valuable assistance to the Press. The vessels listed came from practically all the principal United Kingdom and American ports, whilst two came from Singapore. Details:—

This year, it will be observed, has seen the berthing of the first vessel over the 10.000-ton mark—the Port Denison. A record in length was also made by the Port Denison (500 ft. 4in.), whilst the Tredenham and Tairoa are. both 500 feet long. Other vessels elose up were the Pakeha (494 ft.) and the (492 ft.), the vessels with the deepest draughts whilst at this port were the Wairuna (24 ft. 7in.), the City of Corinth (24 ft. 3in.) and the Middlesex (24 ft.).
