WATER AT WESTOWN.
DANGER OF INADEQUATE PRESSURE. REPORT TO THE COUNCIL. The inadequate water pressure at Westown wae emphasised in a report presented to the Borough Council last night iby the general manager. Mr. Bellringer stated that Westown, being on tjie higher lands of the borough, the water pressure there had always been unsatisfactory, but the enormous increase in the number of dwellings in this part of the town had rendered the matter one of urgent importance, not only from the point of view of water supply, but also from the point of view of fire prevention. He added: “The present supply to Westown is provided by a four-inch main taken from a eix-inch main at Dawson Street and laid along Standish Hill, Wallace Place and Tukapa Street to Wallace Road. When the great length of this main, the high levels, and the number of pipes and mains leading off to side streets is considered, it is easily realised how inadequate the supply really is and how great the danger would be in the case of a really serious fire. In order that the council may have a clear view of the whole position I would recommend that the I borough engineer Ibe instructed to submit a report dealing, firstly, with the question of feeder mains to the town generally, and, secondly, setting out definite recommendations and estimates of the cost of improving the pressure at Westown.” The matter was mentioned by Cr. T. N. Blackhall, who said that if there was a fire there he questioned whether the brigade could do much good owing to the poor pressure. Crs. J. Kibby and V. Griffiths spoke on similar lines, and the matter was referred to the engineer for a recommendation.
