VESSEL AGROUND.
ACCIDENT AT DUNEDIN REFLOATING EFFORTS FAIL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Dec. 5. The steamer Matoppo, 5280 tons, ran on a mud-bank when steaming down the channel from Dunedin wharf this afternoon en route for Melbourne. It was high tide at the time and, despite the efforts of the big dredge and the tug Dunedin, the vessel remained fast, but it is anticipated that she will be got off on to-morrow morning’s tide at 5 a.m. with the assistance of the tug and dredge. Meantime the fairway is completely blocked. Dunedin, Dec. 6. The steamer Matoppo ran on the mud bank when going down the channel to s°rt Chalmers. An attempt to refloat her at daylight failed. The cargo is now being unloaded into the steamer Kotare. Another attempt to refloat her will he made this afternoon.
