WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The firebell and the freezing works whistle disturbed' the peace o2 the inhabitants early on Sunday morning last. Mr. E. Clan, nightwatchman, discovered a fire on an old launch on the river bank, close to the cattle wharf. The fire was quickly put out by the brigade. A special meeting of the Waitara Borough Council was held on Friday last to hear Mr. Brown (the expert) report on matters relative to obtaining from New Plymouth electrical power in bulk. It was decided to accept New Plymouth’s offer of current at £l2 per h.p. per annum, subject to the ratepayers of Waitara sanctioning a loan for the necessary plant. Authority will be sought from the Government to borrow £5OOO, and stpps will be taken to place the matter before the ratepayers. The total takings at St. John’s rose show were £l9O.
; Miss West, of Tikorangi, was aceord ed a. farewell on Saturday last on the eve of her departure from the c'istriot. There was a large attendance, and a very pleasan gathering took plac*. Mr. T. McKencie expressed regret at the young lady’s departure, and extended best wishes for her future.
