Following assurances from the American Government that the United States Naval Budget would be drawn in the spirit of the Washington Conference, the Foreign Office stated the Japanese Naval Budget would he only 276,000,000 yen ( £27,600,000), representing a decrease of 117,000,000 yen (£11,700,000). The whole questions were thoroughly discussed by the American Ambassador and Count Udhida, the United States intimating that should the Treaty for any reason fail no construction contrary to its spirit would be undertaken and t?he American Pacific fortifications would remain status quo.—AuurN.Z.
