BOROUGH AFFAIRS

NEW PLYMOUTH COUNCIL. ELECTRIC POWER BREAKDOWN, The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) and Crs. J. Kibby, T. N. Blackball, E. Dingle, R. A. Large, J. Brown, R. L. Parkin, F. J. Hill, and V. Griffiths. < The electrical engineer (Mr. R. H. Bartley) reported that on Sunday morning, at 3.30, it was necssary to shut down the supply owing to heavy short circuits and. grounds on the system. He found thatk the trouble was due to lightning passing the arrestors and getting into the 6000-volt switchgear and instruments, etc. The power was made available again at nine o’clock, but there was about a week’s repair work to do to adjust the damaged gear. He had also found that there had* been scouring at the forebay, the fillings at the sides of the buttresses having been washed out. He had effected repairs, which would safeguard the structure in the meantime. The engineer (Mr. W. H. Cook) also reported on the same matter. The report was received.

BUILDING CONDEMNED. Advice was received from the medical officer of health (Dr. H. G. H. Monk) condemning a Devon Street East building for the following defects: No ventilation under the floors, which were too close to the ground and damp; borer in outeiwalls and boards decayed; spouting corroded and leaking; windows improperly hung; top plates only 6 ft. 6 in. in height; galvanised iron chimney decayed and useless; rat-holes underneath house. He asked that notice be served on the owners to have the premises demolished within eight weeks. It was decided to deal with the letter on the 20th inst., when the owners of the property can attend and be heard on the matter. GENERAL. The acting-chief postmaster advised that the matter of the council’s rate for the removal of rubbish from the postoffice was being considered by the Secretary of the Department, and he requested that the removal of rubbish be continued.—The inspector reported that this was being done, and the matter was left in his hands to deal with. A. S. Hill forwarded an account for £8 10s, as balance of account, for teams working on Western Park during the unemployed relief works.—The engineer reported that this was a legacy from the dispute concerning the rates to be paid for teams. The council declined liability. An official objection to the taking of part of the Veale Estate for a rubbish tip was received from Messrs. Standish and Anderson, on behalf of the trustees in the estate. The letter stated that unless the council abandoned the proposed undertaking, and also undertook not to use or permit the further use of the existing dump, their clients would seek redress in court.—The Mayor pointed out that negotiations were going on concerning the matter, and he took it that this was just an official notice in accordance with the Act. The electrical engineer (Mr. R. H. Bartley) drew attention to the road to the power-house, on which the Taranaki County Council had carted boulders and had completely cut it through. The road was now a bog.—Consideration was deferred. The use of Currie Lane as a stand for horse expresses was granted during the pleasure of the council.
