WEST END SCHOOL.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The West End School Committee met last night. Present: Messrs. Jas. Garcia (in the chair), J. Lobb, J. Hawker, J. Brokenshire, A. Coad, J. Hoskin, A. G. Carr, R. M. Doull, W. H. Broome (secretary), and D. G. Evans (headmaster). The chairman extended a welcome to the new members, Messrs. A. G. Carr and R. M. Doull, who suitably replied. It was decided to again hold a gala day in conjunction with the Kawaroa Park committee, at Kawaroa Park, on Saturday, December 9. Messrs. V. H. Beal, T. Petty and Y. Hoskins, representing the Kawaroa Park committee, were present, and preliminary arrangements for the gala were put in band. A full committee meeting will be held on Monday evening, Nov. 20, to complete details. The headmaster’s report showed that for the five weeks ended November 2, 12 pupils had been admitted and 21 withdrawn, the present roll number be'ng 637 and the average attendance 579.2, being 90.2 per cent. Owing to an epidemic of chicken-pox, influenza, and feverish colds, the attendance had been extraordinarily low during the last week, the average being 553.2. Pupils of the school had been very successful at the recent competitions, winning one gold medal.' four first, two second and four third prizes, whilst in the essay competition conducted by the Education Department three prizes had come to the school. So far the boys had been undefeated in the primary schools’ cricket competition this year. The hockey team had completed its matches, the girls having been undefeated and winning the junior competition, also two friendly matches against the Stratford School. The proficiency examinations would be held on November 16, pupils from outside schools attending. He suggested that the committee should consider the adoption of the Children’s Newspaper in place of a reader in Standards V and VI, next year. Consideration of the question of adopting the Children’s Newspaper as a reader was deferred till next meeting. Authority was given for the purchase of school prizes on similar lines to last year. The question of obtaining a more suitable site for the school was discussed,
members suggesting the possibility of securing another site along the South Road. It was resolved that opportunity be taken if possible to place the matter before the Premier on his visit here. Mr. J. Hoskin reported that arrangements were well in train for the plain and fancy dress ball, which was to be held in the Workers’ Social Hall on Fr*C ,y evening, and that Mesdames Walker. : 1 Weston would judge the fancy d. esses*
