OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent). The Ladies’ Guild of St. Barnabas’ Church energetically worked up a bazaar to provide funds for enlarging the present Sunday school. The ’bazaar was held on Monday and Tuesday, the evenings engaging most attention. The various stalls were controlled by the following ladies:—Fancy stall, Mrs. G. Rogers and Miss Feaver; sewing, Mesdames Des Forges and F. Hammond; school stall, Misses D. Heath and A. Newman; jumble stall, Mesdames Julian and Pulford; sweet stall, Mesdames Strong and G. Feaver; produce stall, Mesdames F. West and R. McCullum. On Tuesday evening a social was held, being well attended. The music for the dancing was provided by Miss Heath (violin) and J. Humphries (piano). Mr. Hawken, the Reform candidate, opens his election campaign in this part of the district on Tuesday. On Friday evening the Returned Soldiers’ ball at Oaonui was successful and pleasant. About 130 pigs were lifted from the dacon Company’s yards last week. I’liree lorries were engaged in conveying the prime baconers to Eltham. The Opunake Dairy Company commenced manufacturing casein on Thursday last. .Suppliers can get skim-milk if they desire it in preference to whey. Mr. James Conaglen, of Pihama, who .visited Ireland after an absence of many years, returned home last week. Mr. Conaglen will have many inquiries from sons of Ireland as to “How are things in the Old Dart?” There is a decided increase in the erection of shacks on the Opunake beach. On Wednesday the Manaia bowlers played a four rink match on the Opunake green, and defeated Opunake by 106 to 90. An energetic endeavor is being made io form a branch here of the Plunket Society.
