H, Humphrey, Broadway, Stratford. Orders for papers may also be left with him. FJPSITIONS OF CANDIDATES. THE MAHDI GRAS. The positions of the carnival queen candidates have undergone another change on to-day’s count, the order now being:—Band and Fife Brigade (Miss Eileen Kelly) 1, A.S.A. (Miss Linda Walsh) 2, Sports (Miss Lulu Nash) 3, Midhurst-Wharehuia (Miss tai Kivell) 3. The Mardi Gras picture night at the King's Theatre last night drew a large attendance, and a very interesting programme was submitted. Films of the four queen candidates, photographed by Mr. C. Ward, were very popularly received, and scenes on Broadway were eagerly scanned as several well-known local identities were picked out. The supporting programme was a good one. The Mardi Gras Symphony Orchestra of eight players filled the musical side of the programme excellently. On Monday night dances will be held at Cardiff, the Stratford Fire Brigade Hall, and at Wharehuia, ‘by the Sports, 8.8. and country committees respectively.
GENERAL ITEMS. The Hon. W. H. Finlayson, who for 10 years has been a noted Labor representative in the Commonwealth Government, is announced to give an address on Labor, with special reference to the liquor question, at the Midhurst Hall on Wednesday night, November 8. A first class concert programme will also be given, and no admission will be charged. The Hon. Finlayson is a well known speaker, and an authority on labor and the liquor question.
The combined sports’ association are holding a. big Black Cat Cabaret in the Town Hall, Stratford, in aid of their queen. Miss Lulu Nash, on Thursday, night next. The sports have already held two big dances in Stratford and all those who patronised them know fully well that they put on a dance that is really wDrth while. The cabaret, however, promises to be the biggest of its kind ever held in Taranaki. •Specialty dances will be given by well known artists from neighboring towns. Demonstrations of how to jazz will also be given. The decorations will he “Springtime,’’ and the lighting effects will eclipse anything ever done before in this district. Many novelties in the way of dances, including the sparkler dance, will be given during the evening The residents of Stratford and district are notified that Ernest Davies, the London qualified sight-testing optician, visits’Stratford every Tuesday, and may be consulted at Mr. Gaffaney’s, Broadway.
