POLITICS IN AMERICA.
THE PRESENT ELECTIONS. NO DIVIDING ISSUES. THIRD PARTY DANGER. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Nov. 5, .5.5 p.m. Washington, Nov. 5. Careful observation of the alignment of parties in the present political campaign discovers a surprising lack of great issues dividing the two main parties, while the other parties are bo small that they p - < mpletely unimportant. Senator ’}•. ch, in a recent speech, stressed f “.ct. He said the time has come when either the Democrats or Republicans must advance a new and important economic programme or a third large party will be born, taking power from both. Prohibition, though up for teat in five States, is not the real issue, because the majority of the candidates of both parties endorse it. The League of Nations cannot ’by any stretch of imagination be regarded as a vital issue, because the Democrats themselves claim that President Harding is attempting to enter the League by the back door, instancing the Administration’s desire to appoint their own judge of the International Court. The tariff, though showing Republican vulnerability, is also not a vital matter, because the United States is traditionally protective. Most Congressmen and Senators are fighting the election on sectional issiies, interesting only to their constituencies. Women are not providing any spectacular feature, only two of fifteen running for the House being Socialists, and the others Republicans or Democrats. —Aus.N.Z. Cable Association.
