SEAMEN’S DISPUTE.
NO CHANGE IN POSITION.. MEN RESENT NEW AWARD. EXTENSION OF TROUBLE FEARED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Night. The week-end brought no fresh development in the seamen’s dispute. Commencing, at ten o’clock on Saturday morning the executive of the Seamen’s Federation met to dfecww the situation in all its aspects, particularly with regard to the Auckland trouble. The four principle centres were represented, and Mr. W. T. Young (general secretary) was in attendance. At the conclusion of the first session on Saturday Mr. Young was tusked if he could throw any further light on the situation. “There is nothing to tell the public yet,” he said. “We are going fully into the matter, and I expect the deliberations to be fairly lengthy. Whether or not any statement will be made next week is for the meeting to decide.” Outside Federation circles there is a feeling that it will he extremely difficult to avoid an extension of the trouble. The men themselves bitterly denounce the new award, and some sections talk of being prepared to fight to the bitter end. An official declaration, therefore, is anxiously awaited. Regarding the Press Association message from Dunedin stating that a meeting of seamen out of work had decided to accept the new award, and had advised the union that they would not participate in any strike at present, Mr. Howell (assistant secretary of the Seamen’s Federation) stated he had been advised by the secretary of the Dunedin branch that no meeting had been held to consider the question of the award, and the statement was not made by any official of the union. POSITION AT AUCKLAND. NO CHANGE IN DEADLOCK. Auckland, Last Night. The seamen’s trouble remains unchanged and no attempt has been made by the owners to despatch any of the vessels affected. The local president and secretary of the union are due back from Wellington on Tuesday, when a meeting of members of the union will be. held to consider their report
