ALLEGED THEFT OF FUNDS.

UNUSUAL DEVEIXIPMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Nov. 4. Samuel Crawford Rodgers was charged at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday with stealing £3 of the Wellington Freezing Workers’ Union funds. There was a curious development when it was made clear that the union did not desire to press the case, having made arrangements to withdraw if accused made restitution. Mr. Hunt, S.M., expressed objection to using the criminal court for debt collecting, and the case was adjourned for inquiries. Thisi morning Rodgers appeared again. The chief detective stated that if the union declined to proceed the police would take up the prosecution. It was too important a matter to be disposed of in this way. Mr. Hunt: “I think so, too.” The chief detective said the compromise should have been settled before the accused was arrested. Rodgers was remanded on bail to appear at Palmerston North on Friday.
