FIRST DAY’S RESULTS. INCOME WINS MITCHELSON CUP. Auckland, Nov. 4. The Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting opened to-day. The weather was fine, and there was a large attendance. The totalisator handled £66,938, against £77,582 10s last year. Results: — j HURDLES—Westminster 1, Miss Melva 2, Dempsey 3. Also started: Wharepoa, Triboulet, Starland, Kato, Signature, Koura, Nighttime, Totara Jack. Mia Bella, Gay Boy, Doric, Maori Tikanga, Miss Rosa, Salvor, Pukehuta, Fencer, Economic, Polthogue. Won by four lengths, a length and a half between second and third. Time, 2min. 48 2-ssec. GUlNEAS.—Matinee 1, Highland 2, Lucius 3. Also started: King Cheops. Far North, Master O’Rorke, Mountain Lion, Brctland, Bonny Canny, Refinement, Shebang. Won by half a length, a neck between second and third. Time, Imin. 40sec. WELCOME STAKES—Queen March 1, Director 2, Miss Egypt 3. Also started: Gold Rain, Ra Aroha, Caress, Charlady, Mitrat, Uralla. Won by five lengths, a neck between second and third. Timte, Imin. 1 4-ssec. Caress fell in the straight, and its rider (McCormack) broke his collarbone. HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE.—Never Despair 1. Silverton 2, Maud Wilson 3. RESULTS AT OPENING DAY. WHITTIER WINS THE DERBY. DEFEAT OF EURYTHMIC. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Nov. 5, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, Nov. 4. The weather was fine and bright and there Was an enormous attendance. Including the Governor-General and the State Governor, for the opening day of the Victoria Racing Club’s spring meeting. The going was fair. Blacla Adder came speciallj’ from Sydney for the Malden Plate. He was a long way back in the early stages, but won well. He Is trained by Isaac Foulsham. Lady Reynard led for the last three furlongs In the Marlbyjnong Plate and won easily. She cost eighty guineas as a yearling. Coolah, which was favorite, ran eighth. Harvest King made most of the pace In the Melbourne Stakes and won decisively from Rivoli, who cut the favorite, Eurythmlc, out of second place in the last furlong. Eurythmic failed to show his usual dash in finishing. The time was l%see. outside the race record. The first six furlongs took Imin. 17sec. and the mile Iffiin. 42%sec. The Derby was a very fast race after the first furlong, which took 15sec. Whittier won very easily. He has 7.10 In the Cup. The rider (Brown) stated that, the issue was never in doubt. Pike started favorite. Sooraß was beaten in the early stages. Whittier cost Mr. Chaffey £250. He is trained by Mr. H. McfCalmnn, nf Bendigo, who finished the preparation at Caulfield. The owner was warmly congratulated. Whittier has won six races. He was bred by Mr. L. K. S. Mackinnon. Violoncello, after lying fifth in the early stages of the Cantala Stakes, led into the straight and won easily. Results:—

Harvest King led for the last six furlongs and won by three-quarters of a length. Eurythmlc was half a length away. Time, 2min. 6%sec. VICTORIA DERBY. B. Chaffey’s hr c WHITTIER, by Woorak— Polacca (P. Brown) 1 CLIFFDALE (A. Orrell) 2 ANTON KING (M. Connell) 3 Eleven started. Cliffdale made the pace from Wallace Mortlake and Anton King. Whittier was sixth in the early running and Soorak eighth. Cliffdale led Into the straight, but Whittier passed the leaders below the distance and won easily by two and a half lengths. Anton King was two lengths away. Wallace Mortlake was fourth, followed by Scarlet, Caserta, Polynesian anil Soorak. Time, 2mln. 34scc.—a race record.
