NOTES ON THE RACING. GOOD CONTEST FOR CUP. MURAAHI’S LATE DASH. \ (By Wire—Special to News.) Christchurch, Nov. 4. The spring racing carnival opened at. Rlcoarton to-day in bright sunshine, but In liie afternoon there were clouds, and a light shower of rain fell. The attendance was large and representative, northern and southern visitors being present in crowds. The racing was not. wildly exciting, but the New Zealand Cup provided a good contest. Passenger was fancied for the Spring Hurdles, but Cerberus went, out to win all the way. Rowan and Fisher being handy at the end of half a mile. Rowan faded out in the straight, and Sir Roseberry wore Cerberus down from the last hurdle, Fisher being close up third. Sir Roseberry won like a good one. Cerberus stayed on surprisingly well, ana looks like making good yet. Sir Fanciful ran a decent race. Passenger and Old Gold were too far back in the early stages to have a chance when they moved up half it mile from home. Bumptious, Tinihanga, Liquer and Economist were the best, backed in the Spring Plate. Para set a solid pace, but was beaten a furlong from home, where Economist, went on to I win comfortably, Para just beating Tinihanga, ; who came on the scene with a late run. Veil ’/was fourth. Economist, is a good looking horse ■ who can gallop fast, hut requires careful ‘ handling, as he will not stand too much racing. I The Linwood Handicap attracted a field of j t wenty-one, representing lair hack form. San- , tunin was fancied. Martis showed a great i hurst of speed, but failed to see the journey , out, Wink and Lovesign heading hirni in Hie ! last fifty yards. Wink, the winner, is a half ■ sister to Palestrina, last year’s Oaks winner, and she is not nearly at her best yet. Santonio began badly but finished well. Equitable was scratched for the New Zealand Cup, leaving thirteen runners. In a great betting race Foo Chow was a little better fancied than the Riddiford bracket, Royal Box and Scion, with Cupidon almost a.s well backed, and Roseday also fancied. Almoner and Roseday made the early pace. Almoner was > done half a mile from home, where Roseday i and Kilgour wore in charge, with Foo Chow, 1 Royal Star and Tenterfield at. the head of . the others and Scion going up fast. Foo Chow ; was in front at the distance, but failed tc stall ; off Scion, who won by half a length. Mura- ' ahi came with a great rattle to get third. His ! was a good performance, as he was a bad last ; in the early stages. Scion ran a great race, he.began slowly and came front a long way Lack. In the last six furlongs Foo Chow went well, but was beaten by a better horse, at the ’.u ’.ghts. Roseday was fourth, his effort com- ■ ing as a surprise to those who had seen him fail recently over shorter courses. He Is a brother to Solfanello. and will win a big race very soon. Royal Box was well placed at, the ■ home turn, but failed to run on. Kilgour 1 collapsed very suddenly when he looked certain to be placed. Marqueteur never threatened danger. Cupidon was beaten a long way from

home, which did riot surprise the local track watchers, as his work since he came from Sydney has been light. There were eight starters for the Welcome Stakes, the Clifford bracket being in more demand than Bathos, who had been reported amiss and a doubtful starter. Bathos led Top Score and Wild Hind early, with Tukia and Murlhaupo handy. At the distance Tukia shot out to win easy from Bathos, with Murihaupo a length away and Top Score a head further back. Tukia finished on like a good one, but Bathos may not have shown his true form. There were twelve starters for the Apprentices’ Plate, 4)nly Joy Ride and Ardour being seriously backed. Joy Ride and Balefire had a lead of several lengths to the straight, but Ardour cut them down and won as she liked. She is a three-year-old by Gay Lad and a good sort. The twenty-two starters for the Stewards’ Handicap looked a good lot. Epitaph, The Hawk and Glentruin were fancied, with Rational and Limelight also well backed. Rational and Bon Spec led in the early stages, but the race was all over at the distance, Glentruin making an exhibition of his opponents. Limelight came from a long way back and beat The Hawk for second place, with the tiring Rational next. Glentruin is an imported mare who will win lots of races yet. Limelight will do better at a mile, as she does not begin well. There were nine starters for the Rlccarton Welter Handicap. Etta had a long lead at the home turn, but stopped quickly, leaving Gold Light in front, and the half sister to Affectation beat Bonnie Heather easily, with Red Gown third just clear of Deucalion, who came from the back with a good run, SECOND DAY’S ACCEPTANCES.
