Mr. Newton King is laid up with an attack of influenza. Mr. Herbert Halliwell, formerly of Hawera. arrived in New Plymouth last evening. He is staying with his nephew, Dr. Thompson. A Melbourne cablegram states that Rear-Admiral Clarkson is retiring from the Commonwealth Naval Board. No succeesor will be appointed consequently on the naval restriction®. A Wanganui message says that Mr. A. E. Porritt, son of Dr. Porritt, of Wanganui, has been definitely selected for the Rhode® scholarship. He is an old boy of Wanganui School and is a student at Otago University. The death is announced of Mr. H. O. Clarke, of Patea, formerly a Mayor or the town and. chairman of the Patea Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. He is survived by a son, Mr. R. Clarke, of Patea, and a daughter, Mrs. L. Faith, of England. He was 76 years of age.
The death occurred at the residence of his brother, 40 Fitzherbert Street, Lower Hutt, thi® week, of Mr. J. McIntyre, in hi® fifty-sixth year. Deceased, who was well known in the district, was formerly headmaster of the Levin District High School. Mr. F. Hoskin left by the mail tram yesterday for Palmerston North, where he will be one of the judges in the Jersey section at the Manawatu show. Messrs. E. A. Washer and C. J. Crighton, president and secretary respectively of the Egmont A. and P. Association, also left for Palmerston yesterday. At the term examinations in connection with the Canterbury College the following Taranaki students were successful, the subject® passed being given in parentheses. Faculty of Arts: Miss Phyllis Mason (Latin, Trench, English); Faculty of Science: M. Barak (Pure Mathematics, Physics. Chemistry); Faculty of Law: .1. M. Hine (Conflict of Laws, Criminal law, Property I. Evidence): Engineering Entrance; K C. Smart (Pure Matbmatics. Applied Mathematics, Physios, Chemistry); College Prize in Pure Mathmatics: M. Barak.
The Bishop of Auckland (Dr. Averill) will arrive in Taranaki to begin his annual visitation on Saturday night. On Sunday he will hold service at Uruti at 11 o’clock, Pukearuhe 2.30. and Waitara 7. On Monday the Bishop goes on to Okau and Tongaporutu; on Tuesday to Mokau and Awakino, returning on Wednesday to Piko, Urenui and Waitara. Later on in the week he will visit other centres in the Taranaki archdeaconry. The Bishop expect® to be in this part of his immense diocese until December 4.
