The Clansman’s crew, who gave 24 hours’ notice yesterday, were paid off to-day. No men offered to replace them, and consequently she did not sail for Russell. The Arahura wa® to have sailed for Gisborne and Napier at 1.30 p.m., but was one man short, and did not sail. The passengers disembarked, and malls and perishable cargo were landed as a precaution against an extended hold up. To-day the Awahou, due to leave for the East Coast, was unable to obtain three seamen and two firemen to replace men paid off on Monday. A fourth vessel to experience trouble was the Kaiapoi, whose articles have expired. Her crew was paid off, and she was to have signed on new ones for six months. Apparently a clause in the agreement referring to the new award was objected to, as none of the men offered to sign on. It is reported that the Wakatere’s crew at Thame® and the Ngapuhi’s crew at Tauranga have given 24 hours’ notice, and will probably leave their vessels on arrival here. The Waipori, which is being recommissioned, is in need of a full crew. There was no difficulty in dispatching the Niagara for Vancouver, as she is on the Australian articles. AWARD FOR SEAMEN. POSSIBILITY OF REJECTION NO DECISION YET. Wellington, Last Night. The headquarters’ executive of the Federated Seamen’s Union met to-day, to consider matters connected with the proposal to take a vote of the Dominion membership on the question of accepting or rejecting the recent award of the Arbitration Court. When approached by a reporter, Mr. W. T. Young, general secretary of the Seamen’s Union, declined to make any statement as to what the meeting did. The position is to be discussed at a meeting of the Dominion executive of the union to be held at the end of this week.
