RENT RESTRICTION.
EXTENSION OF THE LAW. IN FORCE TILL NEXT JULY. (By Wire—Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington. Last Night. A clause added to the Finance Bill by the Government extends the operation of the rent restriction law until July 31, 1923. When the clause was introduced the Leader of the Opposition (Mr. T. M. Wilford) suggested that the extension should be until August 31 next. He said that this would aflow time for the new Parliament to consider the matter in the event of the session not opening until the end of June. The Prime Minister said ho would guarantee that Parliament would have an opportunity of reviewing the legislation before July 31. There was « great deal of doubt about the wisdom of the rent restriction law; he was beginning to doubt its wisdom himself, but in view of the fact that some hardship would be caused by the lapse of the law at the present time the Government had agreed to extend it until July 31. The House accepted the clause.
