PROSPECTS OF GOLD.
DISCOVERY IN TARANAKI. COASTAL FARMER’S HOPES. During the past few years a good deal of prospecting has been done in the ranges close to Mt. Egmont with a view to locating the gold which indications found in various parts of the district have led enthusiasts to confidently believe does exist in some part of Taranaki, though Whether in payable quantities or not had to be ascertained.
Further along the coast now a wellknown and reliable farmer reports that he has discovered Irtdications of gold on Various parts of his property. Some two ,years ago it appears that he sent a line of 68 sheep to the freezing works, and in two of the heads, which one of the butchers took home, they noticed what looked like gold on some of the teeth. These were sent away and analysed, and proved to be gold. The sheep were traced to the coastal farm, and as ft was proved that they could not have picked up the gold anywhere else, further search was made, and other instances were discovered where the sheep had gold in their teeth. Prospecting was then carried on, and several small stones showing traces of gold were picked up, whilst prospects were also found in the sandy ground which comprises a portion of the f: *m. The owner thinks that similar indications will be found all over the farm. Meanwhile samples hdve been sent away to be assayed, and if they prove satisfactory further developments may be expected.
