FREIGHT ON MEAT.
REDUCTION ON RAILWAYS By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Oct. 28. In the House to-day, the Hon. D. H. Guthrie, speaking as Minister of Railways, made a statement on the subject of the reduction of the railway freight on frozen meat. He deprecated the remarks which had been made from time to time conceniing the operations of the Meat Board, and in proof of their energies he quoted a table of reductions which, he said, bad been negotiated between the board and himself. The table showed that Class C, plus 40 per cent, and war tax, bad been reduced to Class C plus 10 per cent., which on an average over the whole class represents a reduction of 20 per cent, in freight rates on dead meat. On a distance of 50 miles the reduction amounts to 6s lOd per ton; on 150 miles, 12 a ton, and on 250 miles, 14s 4d a ton.
