ELOCUTION AND MUSIC.

ST. ANDREW’S COMPETITIONS. THE OPENING NIGHT. Judged by the attendance of the pub lie, the elocutionary and musical competitioihs, which opened in the St. Andrew’s Hall, New Plymouth, last night, bid fair to be very successful. The competitions have been organised by members of the Presbyterian combined Bible Classes, under the chairmanship of Mr. W. G. Reid, with the object of raising money to help to decrease the debt on the new manse. The executive committee, comprising about twen-ty-four young men and young women, have been working hard for the past month to ensure the success of the effort. The secretary is Mr. Warren Bush, upon whose shoulders has fallen a big share of the work. Altogether there are 205 entries, which will take the greater part of the week to judge. The judges are: Instrumental, Messrs. R. N. Renaud, F. W. G. McLeod, L.T.S. (Exams.), G. H. White, and R. H. Rockel, M.A.; vocal, Messrs. .R. N. Renaud, F. W. G. McLeod, and G. H. White; elocutionary, Messrs. L. Etherington. 8.A., G. FI. Dolby, M.A., and R. IT. Rockel, M.A. The honorary accompanists are Mr. and Mrs. F. R. P. Freti--1 ric and Mrs. Skelton.

The chairman of the competitions committee (-Mr. W. G. Reid) explained the details of the prdgramme, and expressed the thanks of the committee to the judges, who, he said, had some arduous work ahead of them, but who would, he was sure, give satisfaction to both the competitors and the public. Steffensen (68 points) 3 Also competed: Audrey Hay, C. Ambury. RECITATION (20 and under). Ruby Aitken (85 points) 1 May McLeod (83 points) 2 Mildred Ranger (80 points) 3 Also competed: Mabel Crozier (75 points). VOCAL SOLO-(boys under 15). Arthur Taunt (80 point?) 1 Wm. Cleland (70 points) 2 Leslie Drury (G 5 points' 3 Ako competed: F Cleland (62 points). DIALOGUE IN CHARACTER OR CHARACTER SKETCH. Mildred Ranger (84 points) 1 Ruby Aitken (80 points) .......... 2 May McLeod (75 points) 3 The piano solo (15 and under) and reading (12 and under) sections will be held at Whiteley Hall at 4 p.m. to-day to enable the judges to choose the best performers for appearance at the evening sessions. This' evening the competitions will continue at 7 o’clock.
